Homework Blues

As I shuffled into the classroom, I knew that Mr. Van Camp would never believe me. I looked at my scuffed shoes and mumbled, " My homework is not done, Sir. I do have a good excuse though."

" This is not the first time your homework has not been completed. Perhaps," Mr. Van Camp suggested, "it's time to speak with your parents."

"Please, you have no idea what will happen to me if you phone my home," I moaned. It looked as if he was going to fall for my story.

"Well, let's hear your excuse. It better be good."

"As I was packing my bag, I spilt my bowl of cereal on my stuff. It ruined everything that I worked so hard on."
I gave him a disappointed look.

Mr. Van Camp just stared hard at me for a few seconds. I could tell by the look he was giving me that he wasn't very pleased.

"So, you spilt your breakfast all over your work, huh?"

"Yes Mr. Van Camp, I'm being serious, I can even show you!" I weeped.

Mr. Van Camp sighed. "No, no, it's fine. I'm just a little disappointed that you have to redo this. I hope you do know that you're going to lose marks due to this not being handed in on time."

"I understand. It sucks that I'm going to lose those marks but at least it is better than getting a call home. I promise I'll have my work done for tomorrow."

"That would be greatly appreciated. I'll be expecting that work from you tomorrow."

I smiled, then turned around and went to my seat to get started.

Are you bluffing?

Did he actually mean for the bear to chase him?

In the story "Bluffing" by Gail Helgason, Liam starts to run causing the bear to attack Gabriella first.

She doesn't believe him, but Kiley thinks differently from what she has been told. He ran away to try

to get the bears attention, he never meant for it to go for her. If it wasn't for him then it would have

been her who ended up in the hospital bed all wrapped in bandages. "Gabriella grabbed for her pack

and pushed herself off the rock." If she had stayed put then none of what happened would of occured,

Liam and herself wouldn't have gotten attacked. "She knew that if she retreated too quickly, the bear

could be on her like a cat on a wounded bumblebee." She has the right idea about that, moving too

fast would cause the bear to charge, which is exactly what happened when Liam had started to flee. "I

meant for the bear to come after me instead of you." Liam fleed so that he could get the bear to notice

him, rather than her. He would have done anything to save her life.

Personally I think that Liam wasn't bluffing, but that's just me.

One puff isn't so rough

As I sit here, I think to myself...

I never thought I'd get addicted so easily.

It was just one puff.

Or at least that's what I thought.

Each day that passes is another day shorter to my life. If I hadn’t of picked up that cigarette when

I was 12 then I know I would have had a longer life to live, but hey, we all die someday I guess.

As I sit by myself and take another drag, I stare at my fragile, wrinkled hands. They are like

ripples on the water. My fingers start to shake, causing me to almost drop my cigarette. The

effects of smoking for countless years have caused me to become weak. I can feel my lungs start

to become heavier. Thick smoke fills within them. Cancer is slowly trying to take over my body

but I’m trying to fight. I’m trying to enjoy my last few days left on this Earth. So, I’ll take my

last few breathes taking in the smoke from my cigarette.
